  • The City of Independence does not have an ambulance service
    Updated On: Jan 28, 2017

Independence, MO – the 4th largest city in Missouri – has one of the only Fire Departments in the Kansas City area that does not provide emergency transport service to their Citizens. In fact, the ambulance service in every surrounding community (excluding Sugar Creek, MO) is owned by its Citizens and operates under direction of their local government.

When you call 911, the Independence Fire Department is the first responder to your emergency medical incident. The ambulance service that responds to your call is a privately-owned company. The City of Independence has no control over: (1) how many ambulances are available in the City to respond; (2) the cost for transport to a hospital; (3) if the Ambulance Company even continues operating in the City at any given time.

The ambulance provider in Independence is a private company owned by Envision Healthcare and its main goal is to make a profit. Now it’s difficult to know exactly how much it makes here in Independence.  However, Envision Healthcare reported that their Ambulance Company earned net revenues of $521.5 million, just in the fourth quarter of 2015!
