The Independence Firefighters have been serving this community for over 175 years dating back to 1843. The history of the Independence Fire Department is full of tradition, dedication, and bravery. The men and women employed by the Independence Fire Department are a proud and dedicated group of individuals proudly represented by local 781 of the IAFF since forming our local back in 1944. The International Association of Fire Fighters, headquartered in Washington, DC, represents more than 324,000 full-time professional firefighters and paramedics across the United States and Canada.
The Brothers and Sisters of IAFF Local 781 serve the citizens of Independence each day by responding to emergency and non-emergency calls with the utmost integrity. Currently, the Independence Fire Department consists of 10 fire stations housing 15 total apparatus working 24-hour shifts. These members respond daily to fires, medical alarms, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, technical rescues, and numerous other types of incidents. We are proud to protect Harry S. Truman's Hometown.
